I am often asked why we named our company Tigerfish Software. Before getting in to that let us learn some things about the African tigerfish and why it is so special to anglers looking for a great fighting fish to catch.

Tigerfish (Hydrocynus forskahlii).

Gliding beneath the serene river surface is the legendary African tigerfish. The African tigerfish is agile, resilient, is known as the fastest fresh-water fish in Africa and is the first to be recorded attacking and catching birds in flight. This ferocious species is one of the most sought-after game fish in Africa and proves a formidable foe for adventurous fishing enthusiasts.

The Chobe and the Zambezi rivers make very interesting variations for fishing as the angler can fish deep fast flowing water as well as shallows and standing water.

When fishing in this part of the world the major angling attraction is the tigerfish, but there are quite a number of other fish species which can provide good sport.

Fishing in Africa has many advantages some being the scenery and the fact that one can see many of the African wild game species from the river and one of the premier birding sites in the world with in excess of 400 species of bird in the summer months.

The scientific name translated literally is Hydrocynus – water dog and the specific name honors Forsskal, an 18th century taxonomist. This is the best game fish in this area and the reason why anglers flock here from all over the world. The tigerfish is an extremely active and effective predator which preys on fish up to 40% of its own length. It is cannibalistic on its own species and therefore in any shoal the smallest fish must be greater than 40% of the length of the largest fish. The size of the fish in a shoal is usually determined by the depth and speed of the water. It is not uncommon when reeling in a fish as big as 6Kgs to have it savaged by bigger fish. As far as angling goes this is extreme sport and when a tiger fish hits the bait watch out.

A tigerfish has an extremely hard jaw lined with razor sharp teeth on both upper and lower jaws. It has a silver body with black stripes running laterally all the way along, hence the name “Tiger”. When angling for this supreme predator a steel trace must be used as the teeth will cut anything less and after catching a tigerfish even the steel trace looks a little worse for wear. The recommended equipment is a seven-foot light weight rod with either a bait caster or open spool spinning reel. The reel should be able to hold about 200 metres off the chosen line. Line used can be anything from ultra-light 4lb up to 22lb test monofilament line. The line used at any time would also depend on the chosen method of fishing described below. There are various methods to catching tiger fish depending on the time of year the colour, speed and depth of the water.

There are various methods to hooking a tigerfish and all have been successful in these waters. They are:

  • Trolling – using a deep sea rappalla
  • Drift bait – Single hook with fish fillet
  • Bottom Fishing – Single hook with whole fish or fish fillet
  • Spinning – Size and colour of spinner is dependent on water conditions
  • Fly fishing – Size and make up of fly is dependent on water conditions
  • Live Bait – Usually on a float line with fish about 2 metres below float

No matter what method is used to induce a tigerfish strike the adrenalin rush one gets when the fish breaks water trying to rid itself of the hook in its mouth is something no keen angler should ever miss out on.

So now you know about the actual fish.
